Hank Hall from Spirit Lake was awarded Best in Clay at the Iowa Crafts: 39 exhibit opening on November 21 at the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum in Mason City.
Hall’s “Celebrating Clay,” a combination of hand-built, wheel-thrown, unglazed, and glazed clay constructed on a “footprint” slab, was selected for the award. The juror was Ingrid Lilligren, a professor in the Department of Art and Design at Iowa State University, who works primarily in ceramic sculpture and mixed media.
Iowa Crafts, a biennial exhibition, is the result of a statewide crafts competition held by the MacNider Art Museum featuring creative works by Iowa artists. The competition is open to all residents of Iowa, high school age and above. Entry categories are clay, fiber, metal/wood, jewelry, and other craft media. The purpose of the exhibition is to provide the public with further enriching arts experiences and to promote interest in and recognition of the accomplishments of Iowa artists.
The juror selected eighteen artists with a total of 38 pieces in the exhibit. Two of Hall’s one-of-a-kind teapots were also selected for the exhibit.
Hall makes his pieces and teaches art classes at Art on 16th in Olde Town Spirit Lake. His work was also recognized as Best in Clay at Iowa Crafts: 38 in 2007.
Iowa Crafts: 39 is open to the public through February 24. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday 9 am – 5 pm, Thursday 9 am – 9 pm, and closed Sunday-Monday and legal holidays. MacNider Art Museum is located at 303 Second Street SE in Mason City. For more information, visit www.macniderart.org.
